The Biennial Call for Visual Arts mulier, mulieris was founded in 2007 with the solid objective of becoming an open and diverse platform to reflect on new representations of femininity through contemporary art.

The number and quality of the works presented for this 16th edition, including 190 national and international proposals, establishes this call as a benchmark for the multidisciplinary artistic exploration of gender issues, ranging from the most intimate approaches to more social and engaged perspectives. We have prioritised new themes, technical proposals and more innovative materials when selecting the 18 projects that form this edition’s exhibition.

Videos, photographs, drawings, collages, sculptural pieces made of materials such as clay, fabric or soap bars, as well as bio-art installations… all of them aim to raise awareness and sensitivity of issues such as employment discrimination or the precariousness of feminised labour; they highlight the need for archival practices that recover the lineage of women artists who have been undervalued or made invisible; they call for links between what is feminine and sacred to be reactivated; they pay homage to the invisible and essential work to transmit values and care; they question the stereotypes related to the social construction of female beauty and expose the lack of social recognition of women as they age.

We find pieces with a strong poetic and symbolic impact addressing absences and wounds. Alongside them, visual metaphors presenting sorority, resistance, legacies and care as the key elements to build a society that prioritises affection, creation, social justice and life.

First prize - Cristóbal Barbero with the work entitled “Llama azul”
Runner-up - Laura Martín with the work “Por un mundo de paz”
Runner-up - Sonsoles Masiá with the work “Ánodos”
